Position Overview
PNGIMR invites applications from passionate and motivated young Papua New Guineans for the position of Cadet Youth Researcher. Successful applicants will work within the Social Science Qualitative team of the Population Health Unit, contributing to youth-focused studies under the Youth-Friendly Research Project.
The program is designed around the principle of “for young people, by young people,” empowering youth to be active participants in research that addresses their own communities’ needs. Cadets will receive mentorship and training to develop essential research skills while engaging in projects that strengthen sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for young people in PNG.
Main Duties
- Assist in the design and delivery of social and qualitative research studies.
- Support data collection, interviews, and field observations in youth health projects.
- Contribute to analysis, reporting, and community engagement activities.
- Collaborate with the research team in Goroka and Kokopo to implement study objectives.
- Participate in capacity-building workshops and youth research hub activities.
- Undertake fieldwork-related travel when required.
Eligibility Criteria
Must be pursuing or have completed tertiary studies in Social Science, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Human Studies, or a similar discipline.
- Demonstrated interest in community-based or youth-related research.
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a collaborative research team.
- Willingness to travel to remote project sites within PNG.

These roles are offered on fixed-term contracts, renewable based on performance and availability of project funding. Salary packages will reflect the applicant’s qualifications and experience. Please note that housing is not included as part of the employment package.
