Pacific Adventist University Nursing Students to Gain Practical Experience at PIH Under New Agreement

Nursing students from the Pacific Adventist University (PAU) will now have the opportunity to undergo practical training at the Pacific International Hospital (PIH) in Port Moresby. This development follows the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two institutions.

According to PIH dean of nursing, Professor Isaac Joshua, the agreement will enable students to gain valuable hands-on experience at the hospital’s facilities. “The partnership will enhance their learning experience and prepare them to deliver high-quality care to patients,” Prof Joshua said. He noted that the arrangement complements PAU’s existing ties with Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), providing greater diversity in training.

Under the program, about 80 nursing and midwifery students will undertake a 12-week rotation throughout the year. The trainees will develop their clinical skills in areas such as patient care, medical procedures, and teamwork, bridging the gap between classroom instruction and professional practice.

PIH chief operating officer Gaurav Anand highlighted that the hospital’s specialists, particularly in cardiology, will mentor the students across various levels of care—from primary health services to specialised treatments. “PIH has medical facilities equipped with advanced technology, providing an ideal environment for hands-on training,” Mr Anand said.

The partnership is the first of its kind between PAU and a private hospital. Students will initially be placed at PIH’s capital city centre before opportunities are expanded to other centres nationwide. The program is also expected to benefit PAU students from other Pacific Island nations who are studying in Papua New Guinea.
