PNG Pandemic authorities predict a surge in Covid-19 cases in March

The National Pandemic Controller David Manning says health authorities are predicting to see increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in March this year.

He says authorities are therefore trying to control the rate of infections before the country goes to the election period.

Mr Manning said this when he announced a ban on public gatherings of more than 100 people, which is in effect.

He says the Omicron variant is already in the country and though it is less severe than Delta, it spreads faster.

He says if more people get sick, this will put a strain on the hospitals.
